Short on Cheating
On this night before Valentine’s Day, I thought it might be more than appropriate to make a quick post on cheating. That was a joke, but the thought ran through my mind today as I walked through our campus, beautiful and pristine after the afternoon rain, so here goes.
What would you consider cheating? Emotional, physical, momentary lapses in judgments or does it have to be something consistent and substantial? Is it a ‘hey that girl’s kinda cute’ or is it when you know a confession is unavoidable (yes, that’s an Usher reference). Now, those are the two extremes but would your answer, yes or no, change between the two?
I think those fleeting moments of attraction are signals that something’s not quite right, and that it’ll soon become even less, right. That longer than usual gaze, the friendly but bordering flirty text, maybe he’s not your only choice and maybe you’re not his and if even for a second, a crack forms. It was just a harmless act but what was it really, in your mind, in mine? Maybe I’ve always been conservative, or maybe I’ve just been cowardly, afraid to face consequences or commitment. But I think, after the crack forms, wind and dust creep their way in and it’s easier to let go when both sides are less invested, or maybe, that’s just what I tell myself. And nothing’s ever flawless but love should come close and maybe you’ve found your near flawless love and maybe it just hasn’t found me, yet.
My ethics professor, wacky guy that he is, actually said something thought-provoking today - it was like the moral recap after a really funny and crazy episode of Modern Family.
Deep down, we all know what’s right and wrong. In this modern world we’re trying to make things gray, when there’s really not as much gray area as we’d like to believe.
Remember those elementary school days when you received Valentine’s Day cards from everyone, but you’d still get super happy? Know that your supply of love and care is really quite limitless, so never stop giving.
